On May 25th hundreds of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other young people remembered the ultimate sacrifice made by our US Soldiers, and honored them by placing over 18,000 flags on the graves of the soldiers buried at the Marietta National Cemetery located just off Marietta Square in Cobb County, Georgia.
These scouts woke up early Saturday morning to participate in the ceremony, learning more about these great men and women and the sacrificial lives they led. After the ceremony they honored the soldier’s sacrifices by placing a flag at their marker, stepping back and saluting each one.
Pictured here is Boy Scout Mitch Walker of Troop 200 saluting the grave of an unknown soldier. Mitch expressed how sad it was that no one knew that soldiers name, to which his father looked at him and said, “We may not remember his name, but we will never forget his sacrifice!
These young people are a glowing example of what each of us should be doing this weekend: remembering, honoring, and showing gratitude.
Too often we allow Memorial Day to pass by with barely a fleeting thought about the sacrifices men and women made for us to live in the land of the free, and the home of the brave. We take for granted the sacrifices our soldiers made today, protecting us from the terror that awaits us should they not show up for work tomorrow.
This weekend, take the time to remember, or maybe to learn for the first time, what Memorial Day is all about. I personally suggest you make the time to go by the Marietta National Cemetery, look at the the flags, and remember.
The first step to being conquered by your enemy is to forget what it took to become free!
The flags will remain on the markers at the Marietta National Cemetery throughout Memorial Day weekend.
